Oh and bats are just so very cute ;)
There just isn't enough time in a day to teach every subject as well as we wish we could. I know one that always gets pushed aside seems to be science (my favorite). So in order to stop this from happening I've tried to include science into all the other areas we will be needing to learn about. I created this web page about bats as a way for the students to look up, keep notes, and then later write about a Non Fiction topic. I've tried to keep the content at a 2nd grade level (I really want them to be independent in their research). My students keep notes on circle maps (thank you thinking maps training) and then later we discuss, highlight, and choose which bits and pieces of information we think is important and want to use in our own writing. Here is what we used... Oh and bats are just so very cute ;) We later took the Informative Writing about bats and wrote them into a more formal looking paragraph. We used pre-printed line paper that looked like a belly and glued the informational writing onto our bats. I just cut a giant bat body out of tag board, then made a bunch of wing stencils and students "created" their own bats using just my stencils and their imaginations. Then we glued the informational writing to the belly and hung them around class. A little science, writing, reading, technology and art all in one!!! ;) Click on the pictures if you want a copy.
